Gode wind 3 and Borkum Riffgrund 3

Offshore wind farms in the German North Sea

In 2024 we completed the installation of 107 foundations for two wind farms in the German North Sea, “Gode wind 3” and “Borkum Riffgrund 3”. Once completed, these wind farms will generate enough electricity to power approximately 1.2 million German households every year.

Climate neutral by 2045

On behalf of Ørsted, we installed 107 monopile foundations for the Gode Wind 3 and Borkum Riffgrund 3 wind farms in the German North Sea. These wind farms contribute to Germany’s goal to reach climate neutrality by 2045. The monopiles are transported and installed by our newest vessel Les Alizés and her experienced crew. It is the first project for this Next-Gen offshore installation vessel, capable of managing the ever growing size and weight of wind turbines.

Peter De Pooter, Manager Offshore Renewables at Jan De Nul Group:

We are proud to contribute to construct the global transition to renewable energy by installing these offshore wind turbine foundations in the most efficient and environmentally friendly way possible.

Did you know?

  • We tested a new low-noise installation technology together with our client Ørsted. This technology reduces the sound level of the installation by over 99% compared to the most commonly used installation method.
  • Borkum Riffgrund 3 will be the biggest wind farm in Germany to date.
  • The diameter of the wind turbines is about 200 metre, the length of two football fields.

The project in detail

In total, Les Alizés transported and installed 106 wind turbine monopile foundations and one offshore substation foundation, including associated topside. Borkum Riffgrund 3 and Gode Wind 3 have export capacities of 900 MW and 242 MW, respectively, and are located in the German North Sea, close to Ørsted's existing offshore wind farms Borkum Riffgrund 1&2 and Gode Wind 1&2. Both wind farms use 11-MW Siemens Gamesa turbines. Ørsted uses monopiles without a transition piece. Jan De Nul installed scour protection at all 107 locations before the installation of the foundations.
