Heaviest quay wall ever in Belgium!
At the Kanaaldok B2, but this time on the other side, Consortium Soetaert-Jan De Nul are building another 800 m quay wall, which will be suitable for maximum water depths of 18 metres. It will replace the existing quay wall for draughts up to 6 metres, enabling the terminal to receive much larger seagoing vessels in the future.
Jan De Nul are taking care of earthworks and concrete works while Soetaert are providing the foundations. We installed a combi-wall from the landward side comprising of 270 tubular piles with a 2.2 m diameter, a length of 28m and each weighing 30 tonnes. We then installed the sheet piling between the tubular piles to complete the combi-wall. Such a deep quay wall required a novel, solid anchoring method. For this, we selected MV piles. Furthermore, we took on the challenge of installing the longest MV pile ever driven in Belgium, using a free-hanging pile driver. For this, we used a LR1600, the heaviest cable crane Jan De Nul operates.
The result, an impressive new anchoring technique, demonstrating the synergy between Soetaert and the support services of our parent company, Jan De Nul Group.
