Jan De Nul and Willemen appointed for transformation of A12 intersection in Londerzeel
Smoother and safer traffic with a focus on the future.
In spring 2026, TM ViA12, a consortium of Jan De Nul Group and Willemen Group, will start the reconstruction of the Londerzeel-South intersection. Currently, local traffic crosses the motorway, hampering the flow, in particular compromising the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. Even after the interventions for safer turning movements some years ago, the intersection is still difficult for motorized vehicles as well. The contractor is future-proofing this intersection by building a tunnel for the planned light rail between Willebroek and Brussels.
A safe solution for the Londerzeel-South junction.
The A12 itself will be buried and lowered, with an underground tunnel for the planned light rail on one side and a bicycle way on the other. Above this, the ViA12 consortium will build two bridges. Cyclists and pedestrians will have a safe and comfortable crossing via a separate bridge connecting to the cycle highway. The other bridge over the motorway will provide a conflict-free connection for local traffic between Londerzeel and Westrode.
The current traffic lights at Londerzeel-South will be removed and replaced by slip roads. Through traffic on the A12 and local traffic will both flow more smoothly. During the works, the contractors are committed to reducing traffic disruption, in collaboration with local stakeholders.
Better water management
The works provide additional space for buffer basins and improve connecting ditches, allowing more water to collect and infiltrate. Thanks to design improvements, active surface water runoff has been minimised. This reduces any risks to local residents and surrounding natural areas.
Public-private partnerships
This project is a Public-Private Partnership in which the TM ViA12 will prepare, finance and execute the works. The maintenance of the finished infrastructure will also be in the hands of the consortium for 30 years. Addressing the Londerzeel-South bottleneck is a first major sub-project in the transformation of the A12 Boom-Brussels into a fully-fledged motorway.
