Haren Castrol

Haren Castrol

From Eternit’s very first factory in Belgium to customised SME units. This project is located between the Zenne and the Willebroek Canal, along the Budasesteenweg in Haren. We removed the asbestos in the former industrial buildings, demolished almost all existing structures and executed the necessary soil remediation works.

The former director’s house and the warehouse alongside the Vaartdijk were retained for their valuable heritage and have already found a new owner. The outstanding development programme entails the development of 7 SME units which will give this underutilised site a new economic destination.

History

In the 19th century, this site was home to Eternit’s very first factory in Belgium. Between 1950 and 1980, Laminoil produced chlorinated oil products here. Between 1983 and 1997, oil producer Castrol (BP Group) used the site for the storage of several raw materials. These successive historical activities have resulted in considerable soil and groundwater pollution.
