Taurus project

Jan De Nul Group undertook the first construction phase of a new terminal in the port of Montevideo. We took care of the demolition works of the old fishing piers, we removed shipwrecks and dredged the old fishing harbour to backfill the basin with dredged sand. Because of the deadlines and the limited space to manoeuvre in the basin, we deployed backhoe dredger Postnik Yakovlev, assisted by split barges Concepción and Santiago.

Then, it took us less than three months to ship in 850,000m³ sand from a sand bar in the Rio de la Plata. To achieve this in such a short time, we deployed trailing suction hopper dredgers Afonso de Albuquerque, Alvar Nuñez Cabeça de Vaca and Amerigo Vespucci. We also had to take into account the fact that both the sand extraction area and the inner harbour of Montevideo are very shallow.

Excavation works for the dock at the new terminal are planned in 2021. For this, we will again deploy the Postnik Yakovlev.
