The trailing suction hopper dredger ‘De Bougainville’ was deployed from September 2006 until October 2007 at the stretch of the Calabar River located on the side of the Atlantic Ocean (46-84 km). We had to dredge 12,750,000 m³ to make the port accessible again to maritime traffic.
The dredged material was dumped at a number of deposit sites located alongside the river. Security was one of our main concerns because the dredging works had to be executed in a period with frequent kidnappings. Jan De Nul worked hard to establish good community relations by building a jetty and by employing the local population on the project to the maximum extent possible.
