For the construction of Palm Island II, a.k.a. Jebel Ali, contracting authority Palm Island Development (Nakheel) partnered with Jan De Nul Group in 2002. We built an island in the shape of a palm tree. The area is 7 km square, with 17 branches each 80 m wide and is designed as a holiday resort.
To form the island in the shape of a palm tree, we dredged and reused 200 million m³ sand. We protected the new island against the sea by surrounding it with a crescent shaped bund including installation of no less than 15 million m³ rock revetment.
