Dredging of the harbour basin and navigation channel of the container quay (phase 2 of the Port of Tangier Mediterrannée II). Morocco has invested heavily in a mega-hub port and free trade area in Tangier. This mega-port at only 15 km from the European continent is being expanded in phases and has the ambition to act as transhipment hub for the transit of goods to countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Jan De Nul Group executed two projects in TangerMed. In 2014, we deepened a first section of the turning basin to -18m and the trench for the future extension of the container quay to -19.2m. In 2018, we deepened a second section of the turning basin from -16m to -18m. The hardness of the soil to be dredged required the deployment of two of our large rock cutter suction dredgers, the Nicolo Machiavelli (in 2014) and the Zheng He (in 2018).
