Soilmixing in the UK!
London is an ever-growing metropolis. However, since 1850, one thing has stopped growing: the sewer network. In 2018, the storage capacity to handle sewage was critically exceeded. At the slightest rainfall, sewers overflowed into the Thames, which has become an open sewer. The Tideway London project will offer a solution: collecting sewerage and treated it outside the town centre.
Over a 15.5-mile route, along the banks of the Thames, deep shafts were drilled. They are interlinked and after a trunk pipe, the sewer water will be treated outside London city centre.
We were asked to construct two round soilmix walls. The doughnut-shaped wall is constructed to a depth of 20 metres. It consists of 62 sections, down to the limestone. The main purpose of our Soilmix works was, on the one hand, insulating the naphthalene contamination present and, on the other, a guide wall for a 60m-deep diaphragm wall. The deepest shaft of the whole Thames Tideway project.
Soetaert-Soiltech contributed to this new installation, which will last at least as long as the initial one. It will last at least 150 years!
