Open Site Day detention centre Antwerp
Detentiecentrum Antwerpen
Begijnenstraat 42

Belgium’s detention centres struggle with overpopulation. There is a big need for additional capacity to ensure human conditions for detainees. To address this matter, the Hortus Conclusus consortium - consisting of Jan De Nul Group, EEG Group, and TINC - is building a new prison on the former Petroleum-South industrial site in Antwerp.
The new detention centre for 440 detainees is adapted to contemporary detention policies, keeping life in prison as close as possible to the 'normality' of the outside world.
The design emphasizes innovation and sustainability. It incorporates a maximum reuse of rainwater and greywater, optimal daylight utilization, green zones and roofs, water infiltration and buffering via wadis and a ring canal, and connection to the local heating grid.
Come visit this impressive site from 23 until 25 May, registration is not necessary.
