Commuters get a covered area for 700 bikes and 900 parking spots.
In a public-private partnership with the city of Aalst and the SNCB, we are developping the project ‘KAAI District’ on the old commuter car park: a new multifunctional urban district at the station and the river Dender. Together, we created a master plan for the entire site, consisting of a public and a private part. The successful commissioning of the public part for the SNCB in 2021 is an important step closer to the complete realisation of this area development.
Since 2021, train passengers can park their bike or car close to the station of Aalst in the new bike parking and the new aboveground car park at the back of the railway station. These parking spots are fully covered, secured and easily accessible for those coming from or going to the station. Both parking lots turn the railway station of Aalst into an intermodal transport hub, where travellers can switch from one mode of transport to another. The consortium PSR-Jan De Nul Group & BesixRED-Besix was in charge of the development and construction of these new public facilities, as well as the realisation of a new office building for the SNCB.
The plans for a further upgrading of the available sites of the old commuter car park (private part) are under preparation. By investing strongly in this inner-city area, this urban district alongside the water will be fully upgraded, and a long-time underutilized location will become an active part again of the urban fabric.
