Park 1302 in Kortrijk, Belgium

City densification project

The redevelopment project Park 1302 is a successful example of a city densification project on the former production site of Barco, located amidst a residential area.

Today, Park 1302 offers a very diverse mix of 49 houses and 81 apartments, space for smart parking and a neighbourhood park. The low-traffic and green residential area is connected with the existing urban network through the construction of 3 new streets. The name ‘Park 1302’ refers to the central public space and to the Battle of the Golden Spurs, after which the adjacent streets have been named. It highlights the green character of the project and its successful integration into the neighbourhood.

The (re)development project has been geared to the maximum extent possible to the needs of the neighbourhood and the City of Kortrijk. The former industrial site of Barco located in Kortrijk’s city centre did not fit in with the surrounding residential area and was considered an urban blight. The site of 4.45 acres was demolished, remediated and redeveloped into an attractive residential area.
