Keeping the fishing port of Höfn accessible, Iceland

Between January and February 2025, our trailing suction hopper dredger Tristão da Cunha and its crew deepened the access channel to the town of Höfn in southeastern Iceland.

Höfn, located on a peninsula between the Hornafjörður and Skarðsfjörður fjords, is one of Iceland’s key fish processing areas. To ensure that freshly caught fish can be brought in and processed fish products can be shipped out, a sufficiently deep navigation channel to the port is essential.

Harsh weather conditions

However, the winter storms in the Atlantic Ocean cause significant sedimentation in the access channel. That is why maintenance in winter is crucial—though it comes with its own set of challenges. The crew of Tristão da Cunha braved harsh winter conditions throughout the project. High waves often made dredging impossible, and navigating in and out of the port was complicated by strong tidal currents between the headlands leading to it.
With our crew’s expertise, we successfully navigated the bad weather and managed to keep the port accessible for fishermen.
