Jan De Nul helps build student environment at Oude Dokken in Ghent

Artevelde College and urban development agency sogent are joining forces to develop a new campus with student accommodation and community centre at Oud Dok Zuid in Ghent. Developer Triple Living engages Jan De Nul for the construction of these three new blocks. Our daughter company and foundation specialist Soetaert provides the shoring works for the site, which will also have an underground parking garage for cars and bikes.

Campus in the neighbourhood, neighbourhood in the campus

The site focuses on connection, both internally and with the neighbourhood. For instance, the campus has several meeting places where local residents and students can meet. The green zone around the buildings also invites people to get together, relax and enjoy the surroundings.

The two education buildings, eleven and six storeys high, will be connected by a footbridge. In total, some 2,500 students will be able to attend classes, study and relax there, while administrative areas are provided on the higher floors.

The last building will have 240 student rooms around a central green space. These can be occupied by all students in Ghent, not just from the Artevelde College. On the ground floor, sogent will provide commercial spaces and a youth centre.

A green and environmentally friendly campus

Besides the green landscape park surrounding the buildings, the buildings also incorporate environmentally friendly techniques. Recycled steel and sustainable alternatives to cement are key elements for the shell construction. Thanks to insulation techniques and the use of solar panels, the three blocks fall under passive construction. Another element is the use of rainwater and treated grey water to flush the toilets.

Completion is scheduled for 2028.
